How to Reserve Your Diamond Head Hike (Step by Step)

To enjoy hiking Diamond Head, you must reserve your hiking date and time in advance on the official Diamond Head State Monument website.

Important:
If you do not have a reservation, you may be denied entry, even if you get off at the Diamond Head trolley stop on the day of your visit.

Before You Start:

The reservation process takes about 10 – 15 minutes. The website uses a shopping cart with a time limit, so we recommend completing your reservation when you have enough uninterrupted time.

Step 2. From the "Ticket Type", select "Entry Only"

Step 3. Under “Booking Date,” choose the date you plan to hike.

Important:
Please select your hiking date and time based on Hawai‘i local time.

Step 4. Under “# of Entries,” select the number of people hiking with you.

Once you enter the date and number of people, available time slots will appear.

Example: Choosing a Time Slot when You Use the Waikiki Trolley Green Line

If your trolley schedule is:

  • Departs Waikiki Shopping Plaza at 6:30 am (Saturday Only),
    arrives at Diamond Head Crater at 6:57 am

    → Select 7:00 am – 8:00 am

  • Departs 7:30 am,
    arrives 7:57 am
    → Select 8:00 am – 9:00 am

  • Departs 8:30 am,
    arrives 8:57 am
    → Select 9:00 am – 10:00 am

 

Note:
Arrival times may vary depending on traffic conditions.
Please check the Waikiki Trolley website for the latest operating information on the day of your visit.

Step 5. After selecting your preferred time in Step 4, click “Let’s Go.” You will be taken to the reservation confirmation screen.

⚠️ Important:
Once payment is completed, reservations cannot be canceled, so please review all details carefully.

Reservation Details Explained

  • Ticket – Entry Only

  • Qty – Number of people

  • Date – Date of use (Hawaii time)

  • Time – Reserved entry time

  • Price – Admission fee

Step 6. If you need to change your date or time, click the “Change” at the bottom center of the screen.

  • You can change the number of people directly on the reservation details page.

  • For date or time changes, you will return to the first screen, make your updates, and then proceed again to Step 5.

Step 7. If all reservation details are correct, click the green “Enter customer details” at the bottom of the screen.

A customer information form will then appear below, where you can enter your details.

Step 8. Once you have completed all required fields, click the “Continue”

You will be taken to the screen shown below.

Important:
Once this screen loads, the shopping cart timer in the upper-right corner will begin counting down.
Please review and complete your reservation within the time shown.

Step 9. Enter your payment information.

Step 10. Review Payment Information

On the confirmation screen, review your payment information.
If everything is correct, click “Pay Now” to complete your reservation.

Step 11. Reservation Confirmation Screen

After Your Reservation Is Complete

Click “Download ticket” and save the ticket to your phone.

You will also receive a confirmation email with your reservation details after booking is complete.
Please note that mobile signal around Diamond Head can be weak, and you may not be able to open your email on-site.

Important:
If you did not save your ticket on the reservation completion screen, we strongly recommend saving the ticket from the confirmation email before heading to Diamond Head on the day of your hike.

What to Wear

The trail at Diamond Head is mostly paved up to near the summit, but there are steep slopes and stairs along the way.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes

  • Choose light, breathable clothing that allows easy movement

  • Since there is very little shade, we recommend to wear sun protection

  • A backpack is recommended so you can keep both hands free to hold railings when needed

Q. Are there restrooms along the trail?

A. There are no restrooms on the trail or near the summit.
Please use the restroom near the entrance before starting your hike.


Q. What is the weather like?

A. On sunny days, it can become very hot even early in the morning.
To avoid heat exhaustion or heatstroke, drink water frequently and take breaks as needed.


Q. How far in advance should I make a reservation?

A. Reservations open 30 days before your hiking date.
Some dates fill up quickly, so we recommend booking as soon as your travel plans are confirmed, especially during:

  • Year-end and New Year holidays

  • Vacation periods

  • Public holidays


Q. What happens if I arrive late?

A. Please arrive within 30 minutes of your reserved time.
If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, entry may be denied.


Important Notes

  • No cancellations or refunds are available after payment, including refunds due to late arrival.

  • Hawai‘i residents must present a valid Hawai‘i driver’s license or state ID upon entry.

  • Even if you enter with a Hawai‘i resident, admission fees are not waived for non-residents.
