If you’re ready to venture beyond your hotel room in Waikiki – but not stray too far – consider visiting Ward Village where you can shop, dine and be entertained for hours on end.
Ward Village is a sprawling neighborhood of more than 130 stores and 40 restaurants in a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. You’ll find everything from gourmet ice creams and beers, to hula shows and independent films.
The best part? Ward Village is just a 10-minute ride on Waikiki Trolley! Ride the Red Line and get off at Ward Centre (Stop 15), or ride the Purple Line and get off at Ward Centre (Stop 10).
Here are some of our favorite activities at Ward Village:
- Cultural Enthusiasts. Watch a free monthly Hawaiian-language show called “Kona Nui Nights,” from 6 to 8 p.m., every third Wednesday of the month in the Ward Village Courtyard. Then visit the urban art gallery at Ke Kilohana, which can be seen on the sidewalks of Ward Avenue, Ilaniwai and Halekauwila Streets. Feeling artsy? Watch an independent film for free, 6 to 9 p.m., every second Thursday of the month in the Courtyard Cinema.
- Families with Children:Take your kids to Consolidated Theatres, a multiplex venue with the latest Hollywood films and a well-stocked concession stand with popcorn, candies and gourmet snacks. If your kids are night owls, head to “New Wave Friday,” from 5 to 9 p.m., every second Friday of the month at South Shore Market, featuring a plethora of shops, restaurants and live music.
- Foodies and Gourmands:Every Saturday morning, the Kaka’ako Farmers’ Market takes place from 8 a.m. to noon, in the Ward Gateway Center parking lot, featuring fresh produce, baked goods, handmade gifts and souvenirs. If you enjoy cooking and appreciate fresh balsamic vinegars and oils, head to Island Olive Oil Co. inside Ward Centre, for sample sizes to bring home. For high quality craft beers sourced from all over the world, visit “REAL a gastrpub” in the Ward Industrial Center on Auahi Street.
