Each Mai Tai drink recipe is as unique as the restaurant or bar that serves it. Traditionally, it’s drunk on the rocks; occasionally bars make them frozen. Some bars make super sweet Mai Tais while others make more sour cocktails. We love when bars use local rums like Ko Hana Rum and local fruits to make amazing juices.
We challenge you to find the best Mai Tai on the island of Oahu. Waikiki Trolley has narrowed it down to our top three favorite Mai Tais, vote here to let us know which one is your favorite.
Tiki’s Grill and Bar
Relaxed atmosphere, affordable menu, live music every night and a great happy hour (2 pm – 5 pm) Tiki’s Grill and Bar creates a wonderful Mai Tai. On their menu there are a few Mai Tai options. Our choice for the best Mai Tai is the “1944 Mai Tai.” It has Cruzan light rum, Myer’s dark rum and orange curacao with fresh juice and their signature Licor 43 passion fruit foam. Our eager taste testers at Waikiki Trolley noted that passion fruit (known in Hawaii as lilikoi) foam really set this Mai Tai apart from the competition.
Tiki’s Grill and Bar has the most amazing view of Waikiki and a sunset that cannot be missed. Enjoy live music every evening from marvelous local musicians, on Thursday’s they also have Hula dancers. Try their Sizzling Roll-Your-Own Lettuce Wraps with thinly sliced beef ribeye served sizzling on a cast iron skillet. Tender Maui butter lettuce, marinated bean sprouts, Nalo Farms honey & ko chu jang dipping sauce, sesame glass noodles & house-made kimchee for you to roll. Mouth watering? Tiki’s is located in Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel which is a stop along the Red, Pink, Yellow, and Purple lines in Waikiki.
For the ultimate Thai dining experience and a wonderful Mai Tai, Noi Thai will exceed your expectations. Described as cool, refreshing, spicy and very daring, the Noi Thai Mai Tai is sure to excite your senses. Zaya 12-year aged rum, Kraken dark rum, orange curacao, orgeat syrup and Lime Juice make up their very classic Mai Tai.

Kona Brewing Company
One of Hawaii’s favorite beer companies is also a restaurant bar that makes one great Mai Tai. Kona Brewing Company makes the “Hawaii Kai Mai Tai” with Koloa white and coconut rums, with fresh pineapple, guava, orange and lilikoi (passion fruit) juice topped with a Koloa dark rum float.
Kona Brewing Company is located along the Blue line at the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center stop. They have nice views of the marina and their own beer on tap as well as to go beer for purchase.
