Moana Surfrider

waikiki-trolley-moana-surfriderPINK, REDGREEN LINES: The Moana Surfrider was Waikiki’s first real hotel and sits on the land where the last of the royal residences, built by Prince Jonah Kuhio, once sat. It boasts European architecture, with Ionic columns and elaborate woodwork.  Its defining feature is its majestic verandas and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first electric elevator in the islands was installed at the Moana and is still in use today.
When the Moana officially opened in 1901, it featured a toboggan slide 40 feet high, which propelled riders a hundred feet out over the water. The first guests were a group of 114 Shriner’s who paid a pricey $1.50 per night for their sophisticated rooms-complete with telephones and private baths!

Growing in the center of the hotel’s courtyard is the famous Banyan tree underneath which the radio show “Hawaii Calls” was broadcast for over 40 years. Be sure to go upstairs and view the exhibit of photographs and artifacts exploring “The First Lady of Waikiki’s glorious history.
