Nanding’s Bakery is at this stop, selling delicious Spanish Rolls and Filipino savory breads and treats. Another famous spot on our route is Rainbow Drive-In, a great place to try a plate lunch.
For those that don’t know, plate lunch is the local Hawaiian way of eating. Often served with two scoops of rice, mac salad, and your choice of entrée.
This style dates back to the 1880s during the plantation era when workers would bring their food along in bento boxes. By the 1930s, lunch wagons began serving the workers, though instead of bento boxes, they were served on compartmentalized paper plates.
